With reference to last week's outing, I'd like to offer my opinion of the infamous 'Golden Curry' of Old Bletchley Town.I feel my views may have been spoilt last Friday by the fact that my 'mates ' up the TA bar had tried to get me lagered so I'd commit myself to 'returning to the fold ' ASAP......(Damned near did too!)

It was a shame that the George pub was a bit crowded as I found it difficult to 'mingle' but then again, it was friday and also better than risking tetanus in the' Park' or a stabbing in the ' 8 belles'...Enough said.
The biggest upset was finding that Ali, the manager, was not holding the fort upon arrival at the Golden Curry, he was on his Mecca trip or fighting with the taliban or something.  He really is a character and I'm sure would have coped better than his under-study.....This and having to wait to be seated got,  I feel, things off to a bad start.  Nor did it help that the 'young ladies' (?!?) on the next table were also unhappy with the service, apparently they were being rushed to make way for some 'curry-club ' herberts !!!!!!! WHOOOOOOO ?
Then the poor things had to endure Martin's 'laddish charm' which didn't get a single phone-number going his way, although I'm sure Doug's quiet and sensible (!?) approach would have worked eventually.... about November time I reckon !

THE MEAL... At last..... The starters...... It took a while, but my Reshmi kebab was really quite outstanding.  I don't know of anywhere else that does this dish so it is a must when visiting the 'Golden' Basically this is two spiced meat 'burgers' wrapped in a light pancake/omlette and served with mint sauce and salad, very nice and also very filling, probably just as well as the main course took an age !!
Chicken Tikka Mursala and keema nam, again a 'classic' Golden dish followed.   Again nice but perhaps not quite as spicy as it could/should have been, however the portion was very generous (and very Red, you dont want to spill that on your Sunday best!)
Unfortunately I didn't try any side dishes, too full up and by now getting more bladdered! (Doh!)

The staff were trying but seemed 'over-run' to say the least, the stand -in manager didn't live up to Ali's reputation, also noted by the departing 'birds' and there was just too long-a-wait for just about everything.  The toilet (singular) barely copes but, believe it or not is cleaner and better decorated than I can remember from my 'youth' (please no jokes about 'good memory' or 'did they have inside toilets then, Dave?)

In summary, the Golden Curry did itself few favours the other night.  I felt a bit disappointed as I have had many excellent meals and happy times down there. The best time to visit/re-visit is definitely mid-week, less crowding and more attention to detail from the staff.  I even missed the flock wallpaper and dim lights, but at least the circa 1935 sub-continent (?) music is still there, and rightly so.

One thing I did notice, and this is a big plus point, is the size of the portions and the cost of the meal, outstanding. There was loads left on the table, and I can't believe nobody liked it, but the doggy-bag request was politely turned down, probably just as well, I'd still be picking at it now!!
Considering it's a 'first generation' curry-house (the first in MK) I think my so -sober comments to our glorious Herr currymeister von Wallond were unfounded in the cold light of hangover, I mean DAY.  Yes it was busy ( but what does that tell you?) but for value for money and a half decent curry I think you'd be pushed to find a better 'traditional' venue.
